Why dump Quentin’s corpse in the dolphin pen? Are we to suppose that Flipper would -ahem- dispose of the evidence? I just rewatched this for the first time in decades. But that small point there…I dunno. Have a look at Cutter’s Way, a plot that opens out in interesting ways.
I don’t believe Quentin had anything to do with killing Delly. The fact that he’s a mechanic on the movie set, I think, is there as a bit of misdirection. I’m pretty sure the only reason Quentin runs off to Florida and gets himself killed is that after he talks to Moseby about what happened in Fla, Quentin comes to believe that Tom Iverson had something to do with Delly’s death. Quentin goes to the Keys, accuses Tom of killing Delly, probably attacks him (or maybe he doesn’t), and Tom kills Quentin and chucks him in the dolphin pen. Quentin seems to be the one true innocent in all this, besides Delly.
Thank you for that. Saw it again last night for the first time in decades and realised that, much like the film, I did not remember the plot right, but rather the atmosphere, the mood. My memory made an altogether different collage of scenes, and like Moseby I had to come to the same story twice to understand it better.

Hah! Flipper obviously failed in his mission. Love Cutter's Way, too.

Also, can’t get Michael Small’s soundtrack off my mind! Shame it was (apparently)never released.
Sounds like a wonderful experience - it's one of my favorites, and nice to be able to revisit it with Hackman passing. Glad you enjoyed the piece!
